June has 30 days and honestly? It’s not enough! We’ve been busy celebrating Pride Month, organising the AGM, backing the bill for buffer zones, and marking an independence referendum in our calendars!

What’s been going on?

💚 We’ve been busy stringing together our AGM - it will be ✨THE EVENT✨ of July and there will be people (with legs), prizes, and lots of fun! More information to follow, you won’t want to miss out!

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 There will be another referendum on Scottish Independence. You can now pledge your support for Green Yes - support our campaign for independence here!

📜 Young Green MSP Gillian Mackay’s bill for Buffer Zones has been gaining traction, during a crucial time following the overturning of Roe v Wade in the US - abortions are essential healthcare!

📝 We will soon (very soon!) be having our Scottish Young Greens AGM (Saturday 9th July) And we’re proposing a new constitution. Have a nosy and submit any amendments here!

🗳️ And that also means a new ✨National Council✨ will be elected… Why not take a look at the roles that are up for grabs? Whether you’re new, returning, or part of the furniture, we want YOU to run for council!

💬 Talk to us about Slack! What do you like, dislike, or wish we did to communicate better? Not only are we looking to improve our own workspace, but we’re writing guidance for use across the main party too - add your comments to this document to have your say.

Shout-outs for seriously fantastic folks

We would like to use this month’s shout-out section to thank the amazing Scottish Young Greens National Council of 2021-22 ahead of elections! Perhaps we’ll see some of them return? Or maybe your name could be here next year if it isn’t already? Super mega gratitude goes out to:

  • Ellie Gomersall, who is ultra organised, full of fresh and great ideas, has so much vision and gets stuff done! (Co-convener)

  • Amy Smith, with her infectiously joyous outlook and super supportive and encouraging nature, she is an asset! (Co-convener)

  • Chris McFadyen, who even logs into meetings from trains, he’s dedicated and has kept Council organised - we commend you! (Secretary)

  • Amy Kettyles stepped up mid-way through the year and hit the ground running, having truly embraced the role! (Welfare Officer)

  • Ewan Smith, resident Kate Bush stan who worked tirelessly to support young candidates in May’s election (Elections & Campaigns Officer)

  • Raine Paterson, incredible website curator with a knack for all things communications - and the best hair! (Website & Content Officer)

  • Blair Anderson, who has massively upped SYG’s graphics game and taken Twitter, Instagram & Facebook by storm! (Social Media Officer)

  • Sophie Brodie, writes newsletters and lives on Slack - hoping you don’t notice her thanking herself, what an ego! (Membership Secretary)

  • Edan Hughes, amazing educator & sharer of information, making sure no-one’s voice goes unheard! (Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Officer)

  • Paul Rodger, who helped get our heads round the complicated stuff, supporting SYG-led motions through party conference! (Policy Officer)

  • Hannah O’Sullivan, an unstoppable force in the lead up to and during COP26 by coordinating our Youth Hub! (Climate Campaign Officer)

  • Marie Stadtler, with her passion for all things international, this fun FYEG gal gets SYG in with all the right crowds! (International Officer)

  • Alyson Mackay, coordinated socials, quizzes, planned an EGM and AGM, and added lots of colour to Council! (Events & Fundraising Officer)

  • Alexander Kwon, got stuck in from the start, co-established our #education channel, and helped all our council team! (Ordinary Member)

  • Finn Merchant, switched hats in the middle of the year & did so seamlessly - a sunny constant of SYG! (Welfare Officer -> Ordinary Member)

  • Betty Colburn, served kindness, smiles, and super ideas, and co-established our #education channel during her time as Ordinary Member

Mad Membership Stats 🧑🏿‍🤝‍🧑🏼

We now have 2080 members! That means - since official records began in September - we’ve gained 130 Scottish Young Greens, and we’re so happy to have you (yes, you, the people reading this newsletter!). If you haven’t joined the conversation already, make sure you’re about on Slack to see all the latest news, keep in touch with other members in your area, find out about events and opportunities, and lots of different ways you can become active and involved with SYG.


We’re counting down to the AGM - we’re excited if you couldn’t tell already - and can’t wait to see how SYG shakes things up over the next year.
